ECO – that Jewish environmental group

People have more in common than they often think. But we all have one thing we share: the world around us. We in ECO believe that it is our responsibility to be stewards of the environment, for our health and enjoyment, for the good of generations to come, and just because it's the responsible thing to do.

ECO has two main functions:

1. To make the Hillel building more sustainable and to make it a place where living sustainably is possible. So far, we've improved the ease of recycling in the building and we've put a (very pretty) box by the door for safe disposal of fluorescent lightbulbs, batteries, and ink cartridges. We have also begun a "Tip of the Week" campaign to spread awareness of certain ways to make a big difference through small actions. Our major immediate objective is to eliminate Hillel's use of non-biodegradable disposables.

2. To make Northwestern more sustainable and to make it a place where living sustainably is possible. We give firesides on how to reduce one's environmental impact through knowledge and changing little things in the ways we live. We offer grants to student groups to promote green innovation. And along with other students, we lobby the administration to use energy more effectively, to reduce waste at athletic events, and to invest in renewable energy on campus, not just through buying wind credits.

We meet Sundays at 1 - students of all backgrounds welcome!
